What I did this holiday weekend

Wednesday night: I left work late, and by the time I got home, I had no desire to drive another half-hour to Springfield and see the Capitol Steps. Sure, I would have loved to see the show, but I didn't want to have to deal with the hassle of the crowd. So my wife and I went to Elsa's for dinner, and then to Cold Stone Creamery for dessert. I had the lemon sorbet, my wife had the raspberry sorbet.
Thursday: Slept in until 11 AM. That felt good. Sure, I missed the Centerville Holiday at Home parade. But Rebecca had an acid reflux attack in the middle of the might and got very little sleep. I also wanted to continue my tradition of eating clams on the half shell on the 4th of July. So I went to one of the local markets and got 4 cherrystone clams. These guys were huge (about 3" in diameter)! After prying open two of them (which is a lot of work, even with the right tool), and steaming a third, I had my fill of clams. The fourth is sitting in a container of water in the fridge for a later date. Maybe next year, I'll go to a raw bar and let someone else open the clams for me. We stayed home and didn't see the fireworks, except for the ones visible from our front steps. But we could hear them all right.
Friday: Went in to work. It was a ghost town; about half the people took off the day as a vacation day. That night, Rebecca wanted take-out Chicken Korma from one of our favorite local Indian restaurants. I had leftover Chicken Korma from our last visit there. Then we went back to Cold Stone for some more ice cream.
Saturday: Had brunch at First Watch, a nice breakfast-and-lunch-only establishment. Filled up the propane tank for the gas grill. Went to Mendelson's, a local surplus and liquidation reseller. (It's kind of like a huge Big Lots. I call the third floor "The Electronics Junkyard" because most of the floor is devoted to old electronics parts. On a recent trip there, I saw a computer network box from the place I used to work 10 years ago. It still had the company and employee names on it,) Then I grilled some burgers and hot dogs for dinner.
Sunday: Went through some old newspapers. Did some shopping. I was planning on renting a Rug Doctor to do the upstairs carpet, but that didn't happen. Maybe I'll do that later this week. Had Subway subs for dinner.
I've love to be able to spend a few days, if not a week, at home, doing nothing but reading and going through old accumulated stuff. But if I were to sit around and do nothing, I'd get bored and fidgety after about an hour. Maybe I should find a place for a weekend getaway.

Date: 2002-07-08 08:05 pm (UTC)We got home at around 7. The show started at 8. Rebecca was HUNGRY! so we opted for food instead of going to the show. Who knows; maybe they'll be back in another 2 years.
